Pathway: AI in public health services

Five short modules for health managers and officers on using AI safely in health administration, protecting patient data and asking the right questions before any AI tool touches patient care.

Last reviewed: . Reviewer: Muhammad Asadullah.

Who this is for

Managers and officers in health departments, district health offices and public hospitals: medical superintendents and their administrative teams, district health officers, programme and planning staff, hospital administrators, procurement and stores staff and anyone who manages people, budgets, records or communication in a public health setting.

This pathway is about management and administration. It is not clinical training and it does not teach you how to use AI to diagnose or treat anyone. Clinical decisions stay with qualified clinicians.

What you will be able to do

By the end you will be able to:

  • describe in plain words where AI is being used in health systems around the world and where its limits lie
  • use an AI assistant for rosters, reports, stock summaries and correspondence without exposing patient or staff data
  • explain why patient data needs the strictest care and keep it out of public AI tools
  • ask the questions that matter before any AI tool is allowed near diagnosis or treatment
  • recognise AI-driven health misinformation and plan a calm, accurate public response

How it works

There are five modules. Each takes 10 to 15 minutes and ends with a short exercise and a self-check. Take them in order: later modules build on earlier ones. There is no sign-up, no test and no certificate.

If you are new to AI, start with the operational officers pathway, which covers the everyday basics: what AI is, writing prompts, drafting, summarising and checking output. This pathway assumes you know those basics and applies them to health services.

For practice, use only public, non-sensitive material and an AI assistant your department allows. Never use real patient information in an exercise.

Modules

  1. AI in health systems: where it is used and where it stops

A plain overview of the main ways AI is being used in health systems around the world and the limits every health manager should understand.

  2. Health administration with AI: rosters, reports, stock and letters

Practical, safe ways to use an AI assistant for the administrative work of a health office or hospital, without exposing patient or staff data.

  3. Patient data and AI: the strictest care

Why patient information needs more protection than almost any other data, why it must never go into public chatbots and how consent and confidentiality apply when AI is involved.

  4. Clinical AI: what managers must ask first

The questions a health manager must ask before any AI tool is allowed to influence diagnosis or treatment, covering evidence, regulation, clinician responsibility, bias and monitoring.

  5. Health misinformation in the age of AI

How AI makes false health claims faster and more convincing and how health communicators can respond calmly, accurately and quickly.
