When to use it

A notice, form or reply uses a technical or official term that many citizens will not understand. You want two or three sentences of simple Urdu that explain it without talking down to the reader.

The prompt

Explain the term below to an ordinary citizen in Pakistan in simple Urdu.

Term: [the term, in English or Urdu]
Where it appears: [for example a form, a notice or a reply to a complaint]
What it means in our context: [one or two lines in your own words, if you know]

Write:
1. An explanation in two or three short sentences of simple, everyday Urdu
2. One example from daily life that shows what the term means
3. The English term in brackets after the first use of the Urdu word, if an Urdu word is used

Avoid heavy Persian or Arabic words where a common word exists. Base the explanation only on the meaning I have given and the general meaning of the term. Do not invent rules, fees, deadlines or procedures. If the term has a specific meaning in our department that I have not given, write [CHECK] instead of guessing.

How to fill it in

  • Give the context. The same term can mean different things on a tax form and in a hospital notice.
  • If you know what the term means in your department, write it in your own words. The AI will then simplify your meaning instead of guessing.
  • For AI terms, check the GovAI glossary first (for example the entry for machine translation) and compare the result with the glossary wording.

Before you use the result

  • Check that the explanation matches what your department means by the term.
  • Read it aloud. If it sounds like a textbook, ask for simpler words.
  • Ask a colleague who did not write it whether they understood it on first reading.
